Virtual Lessons

I often get asked if virtual lessons are really as effective as in person ones and the answer is ABSOLUTELY!  Not only are online lessons effective, but they have changed the way I teach my in-person students.

Without the ability to adjust students posture or bow hold by simply putting it in place myself, students become solely responsible for finding what "correct" feels like.  It is so easy for me to make these in person adjustments but the problem is when students go home, they can't always recreate it.  This hands off approach helps students become their own best teacher.

In addition, the video software I use is designed specially for music lessons which means no fussing around with sound settings and it comes with all the learning tools we need to make the most of every lesson

Age & Experience

I feel lucky and inspired by my studio composed of students spanning wide ranges in age, ability and location.

Through my own private studio and my work in more vulnerable parts of our community, I am confident in saying that everyone regardless of circumstance, has something to learn from classical music and studying an instrument. I will also add that it is never too late to start because my grandfather was in his 70s when he finally decided to start private lessons!

Music

I am very open to working with students to find repertoire that they wish to work on and I am always curious to hear about the music that excites my students. My theory is simple, if students are excited about their music, they will get better because they want to practice and don't feel like they have to! I also firmly believe that technique in string playing CAN be learned through repertoire and in fact should.  We can't really separate technique from musicality because each of them inform the other.

Students will often send me recordings or sheet music they wish to learn and I will assess it and have a conversation about going for it or waiting until we have tackled a few more things before it.

While I do have a standard, logical repertoire progression, I believe there is no one right progression for all students. I have had students bring music from Lindsey Sterling to Film Scores to fiddle tunes to hidden classical gems and I love them all!
